Visual music theory review and collaborative music composition workshop
Denis Starov is a multifaceted artist, musician, and web developer originally from Russia, now residing in Phuket, Thailand. With a focus on empowering individuals in the complexities of the modern world, Denis leverages web technology to communicate profound ideas and meanings to a global audience. One of Denis's significant projects is Chromatone, a visual music language that began as a personal exploration and has evolved into a comprehensive educational system. Chromatone uses interactive web applications to visually represent the colors of notes, intervals, chords, and scales, as well as the shapes of rhythms and song contours. Through these tools, Denis has deepened his own musical understanding and skill and is passionate about sharing this innovative approach with others.

Synap Homelab invites you to a unique workshop by Denis Starov, creator of Chromatone - the visual musical language. The author will share his unique approach to visual understanding of music, born from more than a decade of study, live jamming and musical research. You will be able to see music in a whole new light!

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to instantly recognise notes and chords using colours
  • How to overcome traditional obstacles in music theory
  • Techniques to help you increase your musical creativity

You’ll explore interactive web applications that process MIDI messages, analyse microphone signals and create visual representations of notes, intervals and chords. You will see how a pure note A fills the screen in red and its second harmonic, the fifth of E, appears in azure on the opposite side of the chroma circle.

The workshop will proceed as follows:

  • 1-hour introductory lecture in which Denis will explain the Chromatone system.
  • 20-minute break to establish personal, MIDI and audio connections before jam
  • 1-hour collaborative music composition workshop where we will put these visual concepts into practice. (Bring your instrument to play together!)

The event is free and open to anyone 12 years and older.

Join us to immerse yourself in the colourful world of visual music together!
